What Personality Traits Are Associated With Long Life Living?

Let’s play a little quiz this morning. If you had to imagine eight character qualities most associated with those who have greater longevity, what would they be? Being easy-going, empathetic, intelligent?

The New Scientist magazine recently released the results of their study of Spanish centenarians and found that the most common qualities were: ‍

  • Sociable
  • Positive-minded
  • Strong in the face of adversity
  • Vitality (energetic and willing to participate in activities)
  • Committed and determined
  • Curious and enjoy learning
  • Decisive and feeling a sense of agency
  • Gratitude‍

Not a surprising list. But the question is, what habits undergird these qualities? If you were to rate yourself on these eight, which ones come easily to you, and which do you need to develop? I know that I need to work on my gratitude muscle as I tend to focus on striving for what hasn’t happened yet rather than appreciating what has happened. So, in 2024, I’ve given myself a new habit of offering gratitude to two random people in my life daily. It doesn’t just feel good to them, it feels good to me as well.

P.S. Trying to figure out what to give your Valentine? MEA has two upcoming Baja workshops that are perfect for couples (as well aw singles) and maybe you offer one of these to your partner: “Love’s Journey: Transforming our Relationships” with Dené Logan March 4-9 and Navigating Transitions in Love, Sex and Death with John Pearson April 15-20. Both of these workshops are offering a special 50% discount for couples (use the discount code VALENTINE when signing up) and are offering financial aid for those (single as well as couples) in need. Don’t delay, this offer will be flying off the MEA shelves.
